Throwback Thursday – Week 1

This year in both my customer and consultant Facebook Groups, I am doing a ‘Throwback Thursday’ Challenge each week.

Every Thursday in 2020 will be Throwback Thursday, a day where we’ll add photos and journaling to a layout we’ve created in the past. I’m talking about those workshops we’ve put together and haven’t added photos to yet or maybe a layout we’ve completed in a class. You know we all have them! I have PLENTY!

So, I’m challenging everyone, including myself to finish those layouts and get them in our scrapbooks this year! It will be fun to see if we recognize the paper collections and how far back they go!

Getting Organized

Last month, I had my friend Kara come and help me unpack and organize my scrapbook room in our new home. Kara is one of the most organized scrapbookers you will ever meet! One of the things that she helped me organize was the endless supply of unfinished layouts that I have, from teaching scrapbook classes for the past 21 years. We categorized them into themes such as Sports, Christmas, Family, Baby, etc. with the hopes that I would be able to access them easier and actually use them when I sat down to scrapbook.

Kara and I worked in my scrapbook room for two long days organizing layouts, stamps and embellishments. We were so tired but we accomplished a lot and it felt great when we were done!

The Challenge

So, today was the first Throwback Thursday Weekly Challenge and I pulled out a layout from the ‘Friendship’ category and decided to scrapbook a few photos of Kara and I over the years. It was really easy to access my layouts by theme. I stored all of these completed layouts in boxes in my scrapbook room closet, but I kept one bin of layouts out and accessible in my scrapbook room to work with first.

Throwback Thursday Week One Before

This photo above shows exactly how I found this particular layout. It was mostly completed except for adding photos and journaling. I was lucky enough to find the printed instructions for this project in the same bin with my layouts. This layout was one that I completed at a Close to My Heart Album Retreat in Salt Lake City, Utah in 2009! Oh my goodness! 10+ years old! I would definitely consider this layout a ‘throwback’! Wouldn’t you?

The paper collection that this scrapbook layout was created with was called ‘Daydream’. Do you remember this paper pack? It included the Close to My Heart colors of Tulip, Blush, Lilac, Sweet Leaf and Colonial White. I think the only one of those colors that is still available and hasn’t retired is the Sweet Leaf, which is the soft, pretty green.

There were a few scraps of cardstock in the bag with the layout, which was a lifesaver when I wanted to print out my journaling on Colonial White Cardstock. I printed my journaling on my computer on regular copy paper and then attached the scrap of Colonial White Cardstock over the journaling on the copy paper and ran it through the printer again. Do you use this trick so that you can use up your scraps and don’t waste your good cardstock? It works well and definitely helped me complete this project easily.

My Journaling

Journaling Tip

The journaling reads,

“I met my friend Kara Hubbell through hosting retreats and teaching classes at the Covered Bridge Inn in Weatherford, Texas. We have been scrapbooking together now for more than 12 years and she has become a dear friend! She is one of the most organized people I know! She recently came and spent two days helping me organize my scrapbook room at our new house.”

Kara has been there for me through thick and thin and all of life’s ups and downs. I always look forward to seeing her at my classes, crops and retreats! We also love to go to the scrapbook conventions and expos and shop together!

I was able to use the search feature in my iPhone Photos and pull up lots of photos of Kara over the past 10 years or so. I’ve included a few of my favorites of her, including photos of her scrapbooking at a retreat, bringing me a housewarming gift when she was my first houseguest in my new house in 2011! There are also photos of us shopping at a Scrapbook Expo and even a recent one from the New Year’s Crop I hosted this past Saturday.

I printed these photos using the Project Life app on my phone and my Canon Selphy printer. These two items make sizing and printing your photos for scrapbooking so easy! I highly recommend them both and I use them all of the time!

Tips and Techniques

I think it is so fun to look at the techniques and products that were used on this layout from 2009? Do you remember ‘Just Blooms Big Pinks Paper Flowers’? I sponged them with Tulip ink and used several times on this layout. You might also notice that there are Lilac Brads on this layout! WOW! I haven’t used brads in years, but they are making a comeback. What’s the saying, ‘What’s old is new again’? There is one other technique I’d like to point out on this layout and that is that all of the scalloped edges were created with a corner rounder! Do you remember doing that? These were the things we did before we had Thin Cut dies and our Cricut Machines! We have come a long way with the help of technology!

The square in the bottom left hand corner of the layout had computer printed journaling on it with a quote that reads, ‘ Lots of people want to ride with you in the limo, but what you want is someone who will take the bus with you when the limo breaks down.” – Oprah Winfrey. Thank you Kara for being that kind of friend, one who I can count on and will take the bus with me if the limo breaks down. 😉

Oprah Winfrey Quote

I love the way this layout turned out and it was so much fun to ‘complete’. It documents and preserves a very special friendship. I hope you’ll join me in the Weekly ‘Throwback Thursday’ Weekly Challenge in my VIP and Team Facebook Groups in 2020 and to use those layouts that we’ve created over the years. It will be so fun to see those stacks of layouts move from boxes to completed scrapbook albums and to see lots of my memories preserved!
